Johann Peter Hebel

1760–1826, Basel and Hausen at Wiesental

By and by I think, these are such dire straits,
and hence the end is close at hand;
by and by I come to think: just let it be,
once its path is run, something ‘s bound to give.
Yet when about my way,
a tune or song of birds resound
I well near fancy to hear some voice:
“Just be content, It’s not all bad.”
